Essentials Oils this Summer’s REAL MVP

So I’m pretty sure it is some type of “crunchy” faux-pax to purchase essential oils from “the man” (i.e. Target) lol!. But for a while now I have really been wanting to share how essential oils have began to improve our little family’s life. And quite frankly, that’s where I bought them! ha! So I’m swallowing my pride, letting go of the fear of all the things I don’t know about essentials oils yet (because obvi, I’m no expert!) in hopes to encourage some folks out there like me. — Someone who is not a complete hipster or “hippie” (no offense) but who might have tendencies. Someone who has an interest in finding and choosing more natural and healthy options for her family but is still a work in “granola” progress.  You gotta start somewhere right?!

And I have to tell you, Essential Oils are an amazing tool to have around the house, especially with a young child! During the past year I have used them as sleep aid for Connor, for the occasional headache, during colds, moodiness & even to help with dizziness. But let me tell you about my new favorite use from Essential Oils this Summer: Bug Repellant! That right! You read correctly! Essential Oils can be used as Bug Repellant! Keep reading for 3 easy remedies…

If you follow me on Instagram you may remember me mentioning that we had a big mosquito issue at our home earlier this summer. And to be honest, at one point it got pretty bad! I felt so helpless seeing us all scratching uncontrolably through the night and waking up with the battle scars to prove it each morning. And although I tried not to freak out, there is serioiusly nothing funny about mosquito bites with the threat of the west nile virus & (more recently) Zika looming near by. So of course we began to take traditional precautions around the house (inspecting all window & door screens, checking for sitting/stagnant water, and spraying repellent around the perimeter). But I also really wanted something topical that we could use to protect ourselves with as we slept (that’s when they primarily began to bite) and I just didn’t feel comfortable spraying Off! Spray or any type of Deet on each of us every night! eek! That can’t be healthy! So I ran across a few simple essential oil recipes online and things have changed for the good. Here are my three favorite remedies and the various types of oils that can be used as bug/mosquito repellants :

Mosquitos – citronella, lemon eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon, eucalyptus, catnip, basil, clove, thyme, lemongrass, geranium, lavender
Fleas – cedarwood, citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree oil, lemongrass, lavender, orange, pine,
Ticks – rose geranium, juniper, rosewood, thyme, grapefruit, oregano

*Unless otherwise stated, never use essential oils on your skin without diluting the essential oil with a carrier oil. A skin test is recommended prior to use.*

Essential Oil Diffuser: I couldn’t get my hands on citronella quick enough so we chose to go with eucalyptus oil for a diffuser we purchased for our bedroom. We definitely could have saved money by ordering a traditional essential oil diffuser but like that our Hemidew Ultrasonic Diffuser is a humidifier as well as essential oil diffuser. Adding a couple of drops of Eucalyptus oil to it at night keeps the bugs a bay quite effectively! Viola!

Lotion: I also created a simple bug repellant lotion using lavender essential oil. This one was important as well because we couldn’t quite figure out how and when the mosquitos were getting in (and we don’t have diffusers all over the house) so this serves as extra protection.

I created one lotion for Connor: 15 drops per 1/3 cup of coconut oil is great for children. Or you can even  mix the oil with unscented lotion like Vaseline lotion. For adults like KK and I, a lotion with 30 drops of essential oil to 1/3 cup of coconut oil/lotion. This lotion even comes in handy outside of our home, and I have even created a mix with Babyganics sunblock for Connor when she is out in the sun. We’ll be sure to take lots of each with us on our camping trip to Zion National forest next month!

Spray: Last but certainly not least, I created a bug repellant essential oil spray! This one is pretty easy as well. For Connor I combined 50% distilled Water with 50% Witch Hazel with 15 drops Essential Oil. For adults just add 30 drops to a 20:80 ration of water and Witch Hazel. I scored both the 3oz Lotion Bottle and Spray bottle at Target (click here for similar).

So there you have it! Essential Oils were definitely the REAL MVP for us this Summer! I hope this post inspires you to give them a try or try new uses like this for them. I am looking forward to discovering more uses for them all year round. And maybe I’ll upgrade my oils too soon! 🙂

  1. Adorable. My friend’s daughter is in the Essential oil business. I’ve been thinking about exploring that world and I think you just pushed me closer to seriously trying it. Especially after seeing Connor sleeping so soundly. Oh to be able to sleep like a baby again. LOL Thanks for the great review. As always, I love your posts. This is my first time commenting since the new format. 😀

  2. Thank you Tanya!! They seriously are so amazing & definitely worth a try! As much as possible I try to keep from medicating so they are often a great immunity boost and all around mood booster! 🙂 I’m so happy to hear I may have given you a final push! 🙂 If you do, would like to hear how you like them.

  3. WOW Brit. I’m loving the mixture for mosquitos because I’ve had my share of bites AND SOME!! I definitely will try just because of that and really need to get a defuser for brother.

Thanks and God bless you and the family. By the way, baby Connor is a doll!!❤❤❤

    1. Thank you Mrs. Jeanette!! I’m so happy you found it to be helpful!! Bites are seriously so irritating and uncomfortable so they are definitely worth a try. When you start looking for a diffuser try Amazon. They have some good ones for a great price! Or if you buy a set of oils from a seller they usually come with a diffuser too. Let me know how it works out! Xo
