Restaurants: Eat at Habana.

One of my favorite things about being a Southern Californian is the food! I know that’s totally a fat thing to say but it’s true! LOL! California (like New York) is known for its unique, fresh & multicultural cuisine and there is no shortage of that near me. At any given time I am probably less than 15 mins away from a Mexican, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Italian, or Soul Food restaurant (to name a few!) And one of my new favorites is the Cuban inspired cuisine at Habana.

Now I should tell you, I haven’t always had such great taste in food. For the first few years of dating KK & I called T.G.I. Friday’s our favorite restaurant! Eek! And while there is nothing wrong with eating there (we still love the J.D. Sauce!) we thank God that we have wised up in our old age! Hehe! And our palates have become more accustomed to fresh (less fried), unique & fun food. So these days you are more likely to find us at a “mom & pop” type restaurant that is not apart of a franchise.

Ok, let me tell you more about Habana!…

Nestled in one of the coolest(this really is one of the most accurate ways to describe it) & trendiest parts of Costa Mesa, Ca is The Lab (“O.C’s reknowned urban youth anti-mall”) that hosts a number of small & artistc shops and restaurants.

This is where you’ll find the awesomeness of Habana! It’s a medium sized restaurant with old world Cuban decor. There are a host of beautiful candles, vintage chandeliers, a large fire pit, and lots of shabby chic, rustic charm.

Our favorite time to visit is during lunch time (although we have also been for dinner) and we love sitting on the outdoor patio. The patio seems to be the most popular area to sit all throughout the day because it is such a beautiful and calming area. Here you’ll often find all types of people dining, business associates meeting or grabbing a bite for lunch, friends & small families. And even on a Thursday or Friday afternoon it can get rather busy.

If you are looking for a few great things on the menu to order, you have to try the White Wine Sangria Blanca, Bocaditos, Lump Crab Cakes (Appetizers), the Skirt Steak or the Burger!

 Sangria Blanca

Bocaditos are pastry dough stuffed with seasoned ground beef, capers, olives, tomato, raisins topped with jalapeno cream.

Hamburguesa Nueva (The Burger) is 6oz prime beef seasoned & topped with manchego cheese, carmelized onions, butter leaf lettuce & yellow tomato. Served with a trio of dipping sauces- (tomatillo, papaya mayo & ketchup) and paprika dusted fries.

The yummy Churrasco Style Grilled Skirt Steak is topped with grilled red onions & a great green chimichurri sauce and comes with black beans, white rice and Maduros (fried plantains).

Needless to say we always leave Habana in a good mood! If only for an hour or two you are transported to a different world through yummy, culinary goodness! It’s an amazing place to soak up some sun (or not!), have drinks with friends and/or nom on great food with family! Our latest visit this week was Connor’s first time tasting the food and she loved it!

Until next time Habana!
